An online profile is:

Any place on the internet where there is information about yourself or your business.
Places like:
Google, Google+, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Skype, Twitter, Snap Chat, Periscope, Foursquare and your Blog etc.

Basically it’s any place online where you can be found or where information can be shared.

Now there are three types of profile:

  • Personal
  • Professional
  • Business

The later 2 often overlap and this is where problems can occur causing developing and emerging businesses to struggle.

Professional Business PeopleBusiness owners that have been in business for many years and have been introduced to the internet later in their lives, are of the view that even when you send an email everything you say will end up on the front Page of Google. They are very weary of what they want to appear to the point that they won’t even entertain the idea of having any representation on the internet at all.

Then you have the other end of the spectrum where our younger generation have grown up with the Internet as an integral part of the learning and life style.  Their view is that we have two profile spaces:

  • Personal space
  • Business professional space

What they do in their personal life is Personal and what happens at work is their Professional sphere and the two don’t necessarily mix.

We are finding that businesses have developed their own profile or persona, that is either projected by the owner in a way that best depicts what their business is all about (its WHY) or, it could be projected by the information that is freely available and gathered by all manner of platforms that are freely available on the internet today.

When it comes to getting your name out there in the market place, whether it is Private, Personal or Business – all of the SEO and Social media platforms have a place.Social Media Profiles

This is evident in that Facebook for example, you can have your PERSONAL profile page and a BUSINESS profile page, same applies to Google+ and Google My Business.

Google is great and we all know the value of Google.  The majority of us use and know how it can assist us (whether we like it or not) on a daily basis.

Having said that Google also holds the rule book. If we follow some simple techniques it can greatly assist us with our Online Profile Building.

The tragedy is that so many companies are wasting effort, time and huge amounts of money trying to get the businesses on page one of Google, Yahoo & Bing. By following some simple steps there will be a greater, if not a better chance of getting your online presence felt,  than all of the outdated SEO ideas that are still being perpetrated today. Yes SEO methods are changing daily.

SEO GoogleThe advantages of having an awesome well managed online professional and business profile, is that you are sending a more accurate and correct message to Google, Yahoo & Bing as well as all the other search engines. Only you know what you and your business are about, yet so many business owners disregard this and leave it to the unknown to decide. There is so much information that is carried forward from previous owners of businesses that is incorrect for that business today. On the other hand many businesses have grown over the years and not kept up with the times and their Online Presence has been diluted or in some cases is completely incorrect for that business today.

By having all of the current information listed in places like Google My Business, it’s an easy way to get your information out there and establish an online presence. Keeping your contact information correct is as simple as using many of the free tools available, such as any of the hundreds of Free Directories other than Social Media platforms. By using say, the top ten search engines and the top ten Free Directories in your area, would be a basic foundation step in developing an awesome Online Business Profile. People don’t realise or even consider that if this is not applied then most SEO efforts are a waste of time and money.

In the course of my work in helping people develop their professional & business profiles, in so many cases I come across half completed profiles with insufficient information within. This comes about by either time restraints or those simply not understanding the value in letting our wider community know what they are about when using the internet. I’m not saying that having a great profile is going to bring more people into your business or increase sales right away. What I’m saying is the more touch points you have that are congruent with your business the better chances you have in achieving more clients and sales. So it’s important to consider ‘What Is My Profile’ – what do people see and does it have a bearing on their decision making when it comes to doing business with you.

Free ToolsWhen it comes to using these free tools, not only will you find they are projecting your business in a way that that you want it to be, they are also providing you with information and statistics about other people on that platform. This is where the magic happens – you now have a prospective client base that you can place your business or profile in front of.

In effect you choose who you want to do business with, whether it’s selling your product or services.  Even if you happen to be in a not for profit organisation you need to connect with the right people.

For example the difference between the free tools of the Search Engines, SEO or Browsers and Social Media:

  • Google – people search for a particular product or service
  • Face Book – you put your product or service in front of them

CongruentWhere the magic happens is when everything is congruent. You are who you say you are and it is confirmed in all areas. People love dealing with people and we need confirmation of the decisions we make. This can only happen online on the internet (especially at 1.00am in the morning), but when combined with Offline advertising the power of your presence is multiplied enormously.

In this day and age we are all on a level playing field when it comes to Profiling your business and the activities that we wish to have on the internet.  We all have access to use the free tools available to us on the net.  So what does this mean? We now have the advantage of playing with the big boys as the internet has no boundaries.

To cap off, if you or your business hasn’t a complete Online Business Profile you are behind the eight ball before you start.

It’s imperative to your continuing success that you check all avenues, search out what information already exists out there about you and your business.

If you are just starting out I recommend you get on as many of the Free Search Engines and Free Directories operating in your area as you can. The most important thing to keep in mind is that:

  • You be human and link your Professional Online Profile with your Business Online Profile.
  • Remember people love dealing with people.
